The AOX (Vox TB V828)

from $280.00

The AOX is my take on the Vox Tone Bender® from 1966. A bright and nasty spitty machine! I tune these to be sonically identical to the original Vox Tone Bender I own. It’s thick and warm in the mids with a little bit of rasp in the highs. It cleans up beautifully and has lots of boost on tap. It does Strawberry Alarm Clock and The Stooges tones perfectly and it’s a hell of a lot of fun!

** These are made to order. Will ship within 2-4 weeks.

** This pedal uses vintage style PNP germanium transistors which are powered by negative voltage, thus the power supply must be an isolated source, such as a 9v battery or 9v power adapter from an isolated source. The power supply cannot be daisy chained with other pedals.

** Both output capacitor values are vintage correct. I handful of the earliest units had the thicker sounding .01uF cap although the brighter .0047uF capacitor was much more common amongst vintage units. Both options are great!

** I tune all my pedals with integrity to be as close to the originals as possible. I don’t add any modern tweaks or “improvements” to the circuit.

** The “Generation” option allows you to choose between two versions of the original Vox Tone Bender circuit.

- 1st gen refers to the early ones that were painted silver hammered (66-67 ish). a little but more raspy and less sustain. Strawberry Alarm Clock or The Doors vibes.

- V828 refers to the later models that were painted black and had “Model V828” written on the bottom. These were made in ‘68 forward. These are a bit more compressed, and sustaining. The first Stooges record and Velvet Underground vibes on this one.

** Please note I am in no way affiliated with Sola Sound or Vox. I am using their trademarked name as a mere reference to the circuit that the Sterling TB V828 is based on. For more information about the originators of these wonderful pedals, Please visit Macari's Website

What’s inside:

  • Built point to point style on a hand cut replica circuit board made from authentic vintage phenolic board.

  • Vintage new old stock and/or salvaged capacitors intentionally selected for quality and tone

  • Vintage new old stock and/or salvaged resistors hand selected for performance and aesthetic quality from a mix of vintage Allen-Bradley, Piher, Iskra, and others.

  • 2 carefully matched vintage germanium transistors. Transistors are hand selected by me through a rigorous tuning process. Transistors are chosen based on how they perform in the circuit. I tune all my pedals with integrity to be as close to the originals as possible. I don’t add any modern tweaks to the circuit.

  • The signal path is wired using high end UK shielded cable like the original units.

  • High quality hardware including full size alpha pots, Cliff UK style jacks, and a carling footswitch.
